The Experience First, Formalize Later (EFFL) Format

Memorization can only take your students so far. That’s why Math Medic uses the EFFL format.

EFFL is a teaching model where students collaborate to think, discuss, and construct their own understanding of new content before their teacher helps them learn about formal definitions and formulas.

This style of teaching is designed to help students understand the "why and how" of mathematical concepts before moving into practice, fluency, and application.

This makes for a more engaging, practical approach to mathematics that can help high school students at any level understand what they’re learning.

Want to see EFFL in action? Register for an upcoming workshop or request a session for your school.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are these math workshops about?

Math Medic workshops are hands-on teacher training sessions built around the Experience First, Formalize Later (EFFL) teaching model. You'll learn how to structure your lessons so students discover mathematical concepts through collaboration and discussion before moving into formal definitions and practice. Every session is designed to give high school math teachers practical, classroom-ready strategies, not just theory.

Are the workshops available online?

Yes. Math Medic offers both in-person and virtual workshops. Virtual sessions are available in two formats: synchronous workshops where you learn alongside other educators in real time, and asynchronous courses you can complete on your own schedule. In-person and synchronous virtual sessions are typically held as half-day or full-day events.

How long do the workshops last?

It depends on the format. In-person and synchronous virtual workshops run anywhere from a half-day to a full day. Virtual courses generally include access for six weeks, depending on the subject matter and depth of the program. Check the upcoming workshops list above for dates and session lengths.

Can I book a workshop for my whole department?

Yes, and this is one of the most popular ways schools work with Math Medic. Custom workshops can be built around your district's professional development calendar, the courses your department teaches, and where your teachers are in their implementation journey. Fill out the request form above and a member of our team will follow up to talk through the details.
